"Bata Ako at Kaya Ko: Livelihood Training Series #1 – Baking Dreams into Reality"

Empowering Young Minds Through Hands-On Learning

Imagine a group of children, aged 7 to 17, rolling up their sleeves, measuring ingredients, and crafting batches of chocolate butter cookies, not just as a classroom activity, but as a step toward future independence. This inspiring scene came to life during the first chapter of “Bata Ako at Kaya Ko: Livelihood Training Series” held at De La Salle University (DLSU) Lipa on February 26, 2024. Twelve young participants gathered to learn practical skills, proving that age is no barrier to capability and creativity.

A Day of Learning and Doing

The workshop blended theory and practice, ensuring the children understood both the “why” and “how” of baking. Mrs. Agtay, the resource speaker, kicked off the day with an engaging lecture on the basics of baking, from ingredient functions to kitchen safety. Her session laid the foundation for what would become a deliciously rewarding experience.

The highlight, however, was the hands-on segment led by Mrs. Albestro, who guided the children through the process of making chocolate butter cookies. Under her patient supervision, the young learners measured flour, mixed dough, and shaped cookies, transforming raw ingredients into golden treats.

One Team, One Dream

Supporting the facilitators were DLSU student leader shepherds, who assisted the children throughout the activity. Their encouragement ensured every participant stayed motivated, even when measurements went awry or oven timers tested their patience. This collaboration between experts, mentors, and learners created a nurturing environment where mistakes turned into teachable moments.

Beyond Baking: Building Confidence and Independence

By mastering a tangible skill like baking, these young individuals gained confidence in their ability to create, problem-solve, and even envision future opportunities. Whether selling homemade cookies or simply contributing to their households, the workshop equipped them with tools to navigate a path toward independence.

Why This Matters

In a world where children are often underestimated, “Bata Ako at Kaya Ko” challenges the narrative. The series emphasizes that even the youngest among us can cultivate skills to shape their futures.

A Sweet Conclusion

The aroma of freshly baked cookies wasn’t the only thing lingering after the event, it was the sense of accomplishment radiating from the children. As the first chapter of this livelihood series, the training set a powerful precedent: when given the chance to learn by doing, children don’t just dream of a brighter future, they bake it.
